(Ljubljana, 1932 – Ljubljana, 2021)
With his quality work, Jože Plečnik had a strong influence on future generations of architects and is therefore considered by most critics to be the greatest Slovenian architect. He first worked as an apprentice in his father’s carpentry workshop. Later, a diligent draftsman with a provincial scholarship, he continued his education at the State Craft School in Graz and trained as an art carpenter and furniture designer. After graduating from school in Graz, he went to Vienna, where, under the guidance of architect Otto Wagner, he completed his studies in 1898 as one of his best graduates. He then traveled to Italy and France to study. Towards the end of the decade, he finally left the Art Nouveau style, as already after his trip to Italy he began to develop a different architectural language with stylistic features of modernism and classicism. As a skilled furniture carpenter, Plečnik was able to design his products elegantly and thus gained a great reputation in the city (summarized from Wikipedia).
