Johannes Holst was a German artist known for his very realistic paintings of ships in the open ocean. He was an apprentice in the decorative painting studio of Hinrich Lüdders. While working in the studio, Holst began painting small fishing boats, then sailboats and later steamboats. His works included detailed depictions of waves and clouds, i.e. different weather conditions. His work has been influenced by previous naval painters (summarized from Wikipedia).-
