(Golnik, 8.9.1944-Vinica, 3.11.2018)
Jure Cihlař was a Slovenian artist of Czech nationality who worked in painting, graphics and caricature. In 1949, he and his family moved to Split, and ten years later they settled permanently in Ljubljana. He attended lectures at the Faculty of Architecture for one year and then enrolled at the Academy of Painting in Ljubljana. During his studies, he received a work grant from the cultural community of Ljubljana. He successfully completed his academic education with France Mihelič in 1969, and a year later became a freelance artist.
Although during his education he had to create according to the professor's instructions, in his artistic expression he completely departed from the previously desired angles. He directed himself towards the world trends in painting and current trends in art, which were supported by the culturally educated public. In the initial phase of his creation, he mainly depicted figural motifs, through which the artist defined himself critically towards society and the world around him. In the 70s, he moved to the Slovenian coast, specifically to Portorož, and joined the art group Junij. He created there only for a short time, and then he adapted his stylistic direction and motifs to the new environment. He still painted in a realistic manner, but he increasingly moved towards abstraction. Figurative art was no longer the focus of the artist's interest, but it completely retreated to marinas and seaside landscapes.
His works of art are real collages of the artist's feelings and experiences he experienced on the coast. In them, he experimented with color and shape, and he repeatedly offered different compositions to the central motifs. He presented his works to the public several times. In addition to participating in exhibitions, he also visited painting colonies organized together with his colleagues. He mostly painted in oil, but he also produced graphics. In 1968, he received the student Prešeren Prize for them, and later published them in several graphic folders. In the mature age of creation, he published the work "Seh pomite, gentlemen!", which includes the artist's caricatures, and he stopped creating five years before his death.
