Jože Tisnikar, a Slovenian painter, was a self-taught painter. For many years he worked as an autopsy assistant in the dissection room of the Slovenj Gradec hospital. He studied painting with the academic painter Karel Peček in Slovenj Gradec. As a painter, he is appreciated both at home and abroad. He is recognizable mainly by his depictions of crows and dark images of the dead, funerals, landscapes and self-portraits, by depictions of the transience of human life, by simple paintings that reflect the real world of ordinary people. Jože Tisnikar drew his artistic inspiration from his living and working environment, which enabled him to create and relive his own world of experience. His works of art are full of expressive and existentialist content. He created drawings and paintings in various techniques, especially in the encaustic technique.
