Saša Šantel, a Slovenian painter, violinist, book illustrator, composer and versatile pedagogue, was the son of the painter Šantel Augusta. After graduating from high school, he enrolled in the painting department of the School of Arts and Crafts in Vienna, and at the same time attended lectures on art history, aesthetics and musicology at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Vienna. He was a professor of drawing and an art historian by education. Saša Šantel is one of the pioneers of modern Slovenian graphics and a pioneer of graphic design. His creation is realistic with a touch of Art Nouveau ornamentation, and the motifs are dominated by landscapes, street views, portraits and peasant or bourgeois motifs.
