(Ljubljana, 1869 - Ljubljana, 1943)
Jakopič was the central figure of Slovene painting in the first half of the 20th century, as he was a leading Slovene impressionist painter, one of the founders of the National Gallery, a patron of the Novo mesto spring and a founding member of the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts. In 1907, Jakopič, together with Matej Sternen, opened a private school of painting and drawing, and in 1908, according to Max Fabiani's plans, he had the first Slovenian art exhibition gallery built at his own expense - the Jakopič Pavilion. On the place where the Pavilion once stood, today stands the Jakopič monument. He upgraded his lyrical and symbolist impressionist technique after the First World War with a resolute expressionist stroke and vivid color. His characteristic themes are still birch, the river Sava near Tacen, field work and still lifes (summarized from Wikipedia).
