Birolla was born to an Italian father and a Slovenian mother in Trieste. After his father's death, he moved to Škofja Loka with his mother and brother. He attended the academy in Vienna. He was a painter at the Vesna Academic Club in Ljubljana, founded in 1903. Birolla found most of his motifs in beggars, vagrants and picturesque landscapes (summarized from Wikipedia).-
