Stane Kregar - Saint Francis of Assisi
Expert opinion (Dr. Andrej Doblehar): The painting was located in the villa of the Pirnat family (Gostičeva 6, Homec), designed by architect Jože Plečnik, and after his death the project was supplemented and completed by architect Anton Bitenc. Bitenc and Kregar were art collaborators, friends and compatriots from Šentvid in Ljubljana, so it is probable that the painting came to the Pirnat family through this connection. Iconographic analysis: vol. Francis of Assisi is one of the most popular saints and is celebrated on October 4, he is traditionally painted in a religious habit and with stigmas on his arms, legs and chest, and as the patron saint of animals he is usually surrounded by various animal species, including birds. It was also painted by Stane Kregar and St. Francis of Assisi appears several times in the painter's sacral oeuvre, depicting him in various painting techniques. Due to its characteristic attributes, the painting from Villa Pirnat can undoubtedly be recognized as a depiction of St. Francis of Assisi. Stylistic comparison: the painter Stane Kregar based his sacral painting on the duality of medieval art and contemporary modernism. He developed a characteristic idealistic type of figure, which is frontally placed, flat and with schematically depicted body parts and drapery, and he placed such a designed figure in front of an abstract colored background. These characteristics can also be seen in the picture from Villa Pirnat. The face, arms and legs of St. Francis of Assisi show the characteristic style of Kregar, which is repeated throughout the sacral opus, and we can also see identically depicted birds in many of the painter's works, which he performed in various art techniques. The abstract background of the painting is complemented by decorative patterns reminiscent of the painter’s drafts for church embroidery. The predominant color is the intense orange background, which is especially characteristic of the painter's late work (the second half of the 60's and the beginning of the 70's). Based on the above facts, I estimate that the painting of St. Francis of Assisi from Villa Pirnat original work by painter Stane Kregar (Dr. Andrej Doblehar).
