Ivan Vavpotič - Portrait of a lady in blue (Marija Korošec)
The portrait of Marija Korošec has been preserved in its original condition, not only the painting, but also the frame. Vavpotič captured the image and spirit of the woman portrayed with a soy masterful move. The portrait features a Biedermeier drawing and a psychological characterization of realism. Formally, the move is flickering and emphasizing the effects of light, especially in the background and in the edge areas. The figure of the woman portrayed is not "lost" due to light effects, but remains true to realism - it is plastically modeled, the volume is three-dimensionally defined, anatomically correctly drawn, the materials are tangible and the details precise. Let us also mention an interesting Biedermeier characteristic - this is Vavpotič's emphasis on the material presence of goods (otherwise a characteristic of the Biedermeier painter Mihael Stroj), the luster of fabrics and glittering polish. The color scheme of blue and gold tones creates a complementary relationship that brings dynamism to the motifs - in addition to the diagonal composition itself. Vavpotič's way of laying the paint is generally smooth and rather narrow than wide, but the strokes of brightly lit places are more pasty. A simple bourgeois portrait from the end of the first quarter of the 20th century would be placed in color realism. The signed Portrait of a Lady in Blue is representative in dimensions and style and in the characterization of the woman portrayed. The portrait itself is important for our artistic space not only as an artistic masterpiece, but also because of its path, which brought it back to Slovenia after a web of circumstances. This work by Vavpotič is a reflection of a painter who drew quality from the serenity of life and painterly knowledge, who created a harmonious world, at the same time earthly real and dream ideal - a world we still long for today (Dr. Ines Babnik).
