Expert opinion on the authenticity of the painting (Dr. Ferdinand Šerbelj): Compared to the well-known portraits of Herrlein which are mostly kept in the public collections of the National Museum the City Museum and the National Gallery - all in Ljubljana this unpublished portrait can also be attributed to the painter Andrej Herrlein. He was mostly a church painter but he created many portraits of the bourgeoisie of Carniola especially Ljubljana. His style is recognizable and the portrait of Mrs. Semen can be defined as characteristic of his work from around 1780/90. Very similar especially in costume is the portrait of Frančiška Samas from Ljubljana from around 1780 which is kept in the City Museum in Ljubljana (Dr. Ferdinand Šerbelj).
