Rihard Jakopič - Worker With A Pole In His Hand
Jakopič had to take on a new human figure when he received an order from the City of Ljubljana to paint a vault in a residential complex in Mexico. The Drug Worker is one of many studies of Construction, a segment of painting that has also established itself as an independent allegorical image. Jakopič sought anatomically meaningful and at the same time expressive postures, which he interpreted painfully with a range of nuances of stroke and estomped surfaces into an optically dynamic weaving of the image surface. The drawing comes from Jakopič's legacy and is documented in the National Gallery among the drawings that the heirs kept when selling most of the painter's legacy in 2012 and 2013 (Dr. Andrej Smrekar).
